Criterion 6.5.10 Penetration Of Structural Members

Criterion text:
When penetrations are required in structural members to accompany passage of solar components, those modified structural members shall comply with local building codes.

Comments:
Installers must follow the installation methods specified in the manufacturer's SRCC approved installation manual.

Installers need to be familiar with local codes requirements and the type of mounting methods allowed - as they apply to structural members. Some jurisdictions allow only certain mounting methods. For instance, in Dade County, Florida, only spanner mount methods (Figure 3) are authorized.

The following are examples of commonly used collector mounting penetration methods. Figure 1 shows a lag bolt penetration and subsequent sealing method. This is a common method used by many installers.

Figure 2 shows a J-bolt mounting method. This method is very infrequently applied.
