6.4.1 Operating Indicators
Criterion
text:
The
SWH systems shall include means for an observer to determine readily
that the system is operating properly and providing solar heated
water.
Comments:
This
requirement impacts both the installer and the homeowner. System
components used to meet this criterion provide the owner a means
to determine that the system is working properly. In turn, these
operating indicators can help reduce maintenance calls by providing
the homeowner a better understanding of the system. They also
serve as a diagnostic tool for service personnel.
The
installer must install the operating indicators that have been
included with the SRCC certified system. These are listed in the
manufacturer's installation manual and schematic. The schematic
indicates where the components should be installed.
Examples
of operating indicators are in line thermometers (Figure 1) and
flow meters (Figure 2).

Figure 1

Figure 2
Figure
3 illustrates the in line use of a flow meter and thermometer.
With this combination, the system owner and maintenance personnel
can quickly determine whether the system is operating properly.

An
explanation of the operating indicators must also be provided
to the system owner. The homeowner's manual will provide this
information.
The
installed operating indicators must also include a tag or label
that explains what the owner should be looking for to determine
proper system operation. As indicated in Figure 4, the flow meter
identification tag not only explains what the function of the
flow meter is, but also lists the correct flow rate for the system.
Using this information, the owner can conduct a quick visual examination
to determine proper system operation.

Figure 4
Tags
and labels that will be used on the system should be identified
and prepared before the installation begins. Upon completion of
component installation, the installer has only to choose each
individual tag and place it on the respective operating indicator.
