6.5.18 Control Sensor Installation
Criterion
text:
Control
sensors and the means for transmitting sensor outputs to control
devices shall be protected from environmental influence such as
wind, moisture, temperature or other factors which may alter their
intended sensing function.
Comments:
This criteria deals primarily with the installation of
the sensor and sensor wiring. Sensor must be
protected from environmental factors (rain, moisture, etc.) that
can alter the function of the sensor.
This
standard is very similar to 6.1.5.5 Control Lines and Sensors.
Installers must take special care to ensure that this standard
is met during the installation phase.
Installers
must use the manufacturer's provided control equipment and materials
and follow instructions contained in the SRCC approved installation
manual. Acceptable industry standards must also be followed.
The
sensor must also be installed at the proper location, in most
cases on the collector return piping directly adjacent to the
collector. See Figure 4.
Control
sensors and wiring provided by the system manufacturer must be
used. SRCC has reviewed and approved the manufacturer's components
and ancillary materials. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a sensor packet
provided by the manufacturer. It includes sensors, sensor wiring,
connectors, clamps, and thermal paste. A well organized packet
provides the installer with all the materials needed for the control
sensor and wiring installation.

Figure 2
Proper
mounting of the sensor and connection to the transmission wiring
is vital for proper system operation. (See Figure 3)

Figure 3
In
Figure 4, note that the sensor is securely attached to the collector
return outlet piping.

Figure 4
Although
in Figure 5, the sensor is protected from environmental influences
by being under the pipe insulation, the connector itself is not.

Figure 5
The
integrity of other components must not be compromised during the
installation process. As evident in Figure 6, the sensor installation
should have been installed with a bit more care. This installation
not only negates the use of the collector's sealing gasket, but
also leaves much to be desired in regard to a solid connection
of the sensor to the piping.

Figure 6
The
sensor installation in Figure 7 (as well as the insulation (plastic),
insulation protection, and flashing) is incorrect. The sensor
should have been installed where indicated.
